I used to love the Malaysia Cup.....

Once in a while, I do read abt what's happening in the world of Malaysian football. The sorry state of affairs we find our football in now is just ridiculous. The famed Merdeka Football Tournament, previously one of the most prestigious tournaments in Asia, can now only attract teams like the Philippines, Sierra Leone, Myanmar etc. South Korea and Japan used to be regulars in the tournament. And if my memory serves me right, Brazilian champions Sao Paulo took part once before. So what has caused our ratings to plunge like an anchor. I can think of a few reasons :

a)Parents obsession with academic results. Can't blame parents for wanting the best for their kids. But I am sure there is a Soh Chin Aun or a Mokhtar Dahari slogging in those tuition classes after school.

b)Safety reasons. The current spate of abductions of children has expectedly raised fears of parents allowing their children to play outdoors.

c)Computer games. Even the British govt has said that this is one of the major causes why there is a big drop in kids registering at football clubs to pursue football as a career.

d)Poor management. Just look at how many times the FAM has bailed out state FAs who have failed to pay salaries etc to their players. Recently, the FA of Sarawak is reported to owe 3.5million to the EPF, IRD and salaries to players. Now, if this is not a deterrent to a parent encouraging their kid to take up football seriously, then I donno what is.

e)Lack of a visionary leader. The Sultan of Pahang has been helming the FAM for abt 25 years now. Co-incidentally he took over from the time M'sia last had major international success, that is in 1980 when we qualified for the Olympics. He has done nothing for football in the country except make us drop down the rankings. And yet he refuses to give up his post and keeps saying that "Only Cowards Quit". That is his reason for staying on. Hello Sir, u have been brave for 25 years now and growing old. Let someone else take over for heaven's sake. It's not that your successor can do any worse!

I know how to criticise but I seriously do not know what can be done to push up our standards. Anyone out there with a magic wand?

LLT Dude: Don't really know what's happening these days with kids, and parents at that. Kiasu/takut sangat. Fondly remember the days of fishing, football(before I tried to take out Tay Swee Hoe and got my ligaments torn..bastard owes me 2000hrs. of football..well we had fun..too much fun and still did alright..he's a surgeon at Mayo Clinic now i think).

You did forget to mention about the bribes in Malaysian football, even the failing sports schools. When I was in Penang, I used to travel back every week to watch Malacca FC...fuckin' awesome..especially when Ramli Junit scored the injury time goal against Selangor..there was a Maxican wave around Kubu..believe me Kubu..a place where you can loose your slippers and have to go under the stands to piss..hahaha...
Good Ol' times dude!!!
Have a good holiday dude(bastard enjoying rendang etc...fucker!!), M.

sigh....... so true. tuitions, kidnappings... sadistic pedophiles. these are enuff to stop parents frm encouraging their children to go out for a kick. they would prefer their children to be playing computer games at home....

senorita & mohan: Can vouch fer that, LLT here fooking stuffed his fat gob today . . .

LLT: You forget to mention a very important factor in our footie's decline - QUOTA SYSTEM.

That later became a patronage system whereby anak tuan tu, dato ni or knew the right people got into the teams.

Me is a firm believer that football is a reflection of society.
So no wonder our footie is corrupt, half-baked, helmed by people who don't understand accountability etc etc.
